Halloween brings costumes, community celebrations, and busier streets with more pedestrians. At CITY RISE, we know road safety goes beyond the jobsite. By staying alert, slowing down and looking out for one another, we can help keep our communities safe this Halloween.
A Little Extra Caution Can Make a Big Difference
Children may be distracted while trick-or-treating, and costumes can make them harder to see. Drivers should slow down, scan the road, and anticipate pedestrians entering the street unexpectedly.
Driver Safety Tips:
- Slow Down: Give yourself extra time to react, especially in residential areas.
- Stay Alert: Watch for children, pedestrians, and unexpected hazards.
- Never Drive Impaired: Arrange a designated driver, rideshare, or taxi if drinking.
Pedestrian Safety Tips:
- Be Visible: Use flashlights and reflective elements on costumes after dark.
- Cross Carefully: Use crosswalks, follow traffic signals, and look in all directions.
- Be Aware of Surroundings: Stop, look & listen for cars before crossing the street.
Celebrate Responsibly. Never Drive Impaired.
Halloween celebrations can also bring an increased risk of impaired driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly half of all crash fatalities during Halloween night in 2024 were alcohol-related.
Hosts can help keep guests safe by offering nonalcoholic drinks and ensuring everyone has a safe way home. If you see someone driving impaired, contact law enforcement when it’s safe to do so. Getting home safely should always be part of the plan.
Community Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility
Road safety takes awareness and a commitment to looking out for one another. This Halloween, let’s make safe choices and help prevent accidents.
